Grows best in morning sun or part shade in fertile, well-drained acidic soil. Protect from hot afternoon sun and strong winds. Keep soil moist but not soggy, and mulch well to retain moisture. Apply a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in spring and again in summer.
