Our journey began when George Russell Dawson partnered with Edward James Harrison to establish a nursery in Belmont. Delivering plants by horse and cart, they laid the foundation for a Western Australian gardening institution. In 1914, we expanded to Forrestfield, where our main garden centre still thrives.
Over the years, we’ve grown alongside our community, adapting to the needs of local gardeners while staying true to our family values. From our humble beginnings to our current four locations across Perth, our commitment to quality and service remains unwavering.
We take pride in the plants we grow and sell. Because we nurture our plants from propagation to sale, we confidently offer an unconditional 12-month guarantee. If a plant doesn’t thrive, we’ll replace it.
Nestled within our Forrestfield centre is The Homestead Café, a charming spot steeped in history. Originally the Dawson family home, built in 1918, it has been lovingly transformed into a café that retains its rustic charm. Enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat as you soak in the serene garden surroundings.

At the heart of Dawson’s Garden World are Charlie and Ian Dawson — father and son, and two guiding hands behind the business. While they’ve followed different paths into the nursery world, both share a deep love for the plants, people, and community that make Dawson’s what it is today.
Charlie grew up with the business, helping out during school holidays before stepping into a full-time role over 13 years ago. Today, he leads the day-to-day operations with energy, care, and a passion for keeping Dawson’s thriving for future generations.
Ian’s journey began a little differently. With a background in agriculture and accounting, he stepped into the business ‘just for a year’ to help his father during a difficult time. Over 50 years later, he’s still a guiding presence — now semi-retired but quietly overseeing financials and big-picture planning, staying true to his lifelong dedication.
Of course, no story about the Dawsons would be complete without Flash and Peaches. Flash, Ian’s cheeky Jack Russell, has a fondness for paperwork (especially chewing it), while Peaches, Charlie’s Cavoodle, brings calm cuddles and regular appearances around the nursery. Together, they keep spirits high and remind us that every team is better with paws.
